After Embryo Transfer – Signs & Symptoms to Look For
Let’s take a quick look at some of the symptoms that may indicate a successful embryo transfer. It must be noted that not experiencing any symptoms does not necessarily mean bad news. You must remember that every body is different and reacts differently to these procedures.
1. Spotting
Very light bleeding may happen due to the embryo implantation into the uterus lining, indicating the inception of a pregnancy. The spotting may happen a week after the embryo transfer and sometimes even sooner.
The issue with this symptom is that light bleeding after embryo transfer is not always a positive sign. Bleeding may also occur due to an unsuccessful transfer. The best approach is to not panic and get in touch with your fertility specialist or IVF doctor.

2. Bloating
Bloating in the lower abdomen, the kind you may experience at the start of your period, can also be the sign of a successful embryo transfer. However, if your bloating is combined with some pain, while this is very rare, could be due to OHSS. OHSS or Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome is the swelling of ovaries due to excess hormones from the injectable fertility medication. This is a medical condition that calls for immediate medical attention and treatment.
3. Cramping
Mild cramping can be an early sign of a successful pregnancy. Patients may experience some cramping due to the progesterone that loosens their muscles and ligaments, preparing them to be able to accommodate a fetus.
4. Breast Tenderness
Sore or enlarged breasts is among the first signs of a successful embryo transfer and an early pregnancy. Interestingly, some women experience breast tenderness even during their regular menstrual cycle. This could also be caused by the estrogen from your IVF cycle.
This is why breast tenderness in itself may not be the most reliable symptom of a successful embryo transfer.
5. Nausea
Nausea is a common sign of a positive pregnancy and is the effect that pregnancy hormones create on the body. It must be noted that nausea on account of a successful embryo transfer is not the same as nausea in the first trimester of a pregnancy.
6. Fatigue
Fatigue is an extremely common sign of an early pregnancy and it can hit you as early as day one! If you find yourself unusually tired or wanting to hit the bed earlier than usual, there’s a good chance that your embryo transfer has been successful. To be sure, take a pregnancy test or see your doctor.
7. Vaginal Discharge
You may experience an increase in the vaginal discharge after embryo transfer, indicating success of the procedure. In early pregnancy, an increased vaginal discharge protects the uterus from infections. A discharge related to a healthy and successful pregnancy is typically milky white or clear, with a mild odour. If you experience anything unusual, check with your doctor.

No Symptoms After Embryo Transfer – Is that a bad sign?
Not necessarily.
Every body reacts differently and just because you’re not experiencing any of the early stage symptoms, it doesn’t mean your embryo transfer has failed. In fact, ‘no symptoms’ is more common than you would imagine.
Dr. Shweta Goswami says, “All these symptoms are nonspecific and a Beta HCG test is the first test that confirms if the implantation has happened or not. We should try and not analyze or read too much into the signs and symptoms”. According to Dr. Goswami, most of these symptoms, like bleeding, may be a negative sign in some cases, which is why having no symptoms could actually be a positive sign.
After Embryo Transfer – When to take a pregnancy test?
Ideally you should wait for around 2 weeks after embryo transfer to take a pregnancy test, or whatever timeline your fertility specialist may recommend. If your test is negative, don’t feel disheartened. This is a process that needs time and patience.
